The Architecture of the Modern Movement. The Book.

The book "La Arquitectura del Movimiento Moderno, Selección de Obras del Registro Nacional", was published by DOCOMOMO Cuba, with Architect Eduardo Luis Rodriguez as editor. This book includes 150 buildings constructed between 1931 and 1979 that have been legally protected thanks to DOCOMOMO's work.

According to the this publication's Editor "giving priority to the quality and uniqueness in our context was taken as the guiding principle for the selection of the buildings".

The book's sections are organized according to the Cuban provinces, following in each a chronological sequence. The section devoted to Camagüey, written by Wilfredo Rodriguez and Vivian Más, has as its front page the Máximo Gómez Vocational School. The book has been published by Ediciones UNION, Arquitectura y Ciudad Collection (2011).

With more than 45,000 m2 and designed to house 2,500 students, this mega-building, real urban complex (classrooms, dormitories, movie theater, swimming pools, gym and hospital) basically follows a distributive scheme to some extent derived from the Bauhaus in Dessau, multiplied and taken to its ultimate consequences.

Although it was not the only school of its kind in the country, it is one of the most noteworthy because of its architecture: in it the architect unified fifteen buildings of different heights and a circular amphitheater using a system of overhead corridors that, together with its volumetry and color scheme, represent the project's greatest success.

The complex's extreme horizontality and great extension are minimized thanks to its urban solution based on plazas and inner courtyards generated by the plan's continuous movement around the planting clusters designed by architect Luis Rubio. The complex was renovated in 2008 by Luis Espada and Ana Cristina Rodriguez
